The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is an EU regulation setting a new standard for corporate sustainability disclosures. It requires companies to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data into their financial reports. Recent updates under the Omnibus proposal have simplified compliance and reduced the number of affected companies.

Directive
CSRD took effect on January 5, 2023, aiming to expand sustainability reporting beyond NFRD requirements. Originally, nearly 50,000 companies were expected to comply, with large firms starting in 2026, followed by smaller businesses up to 2030.
However, the Omnibus proposal has delayed and narrowed CSRD’s scope. Now, only companies with over 1,000 employees, €50 million in revenue, or €25 million in assets will be required to report. Large enterprises will start in 2028 instead of 2026, reducing the number of affected firms by 80%.
The European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) continues refining standards, with final approval by the European Commission expected after further consultations.
The CSRD requires sustainability reporting from large entities, both within and outside the EU. Initially, an estimated 50,000 companies were expected to comply. However, following the Omnibus Proposal, the scope has been reduced by 80%, now affecting around 6,000 companies — primarily large entities. The detailed criteria are outlined below.

A : CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) reporting is a standardized framework for companies operating in the EU to disclose their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts.
A : CSRD applies to a range of large entities both within and outside the EU. The implementation is phased, starting in 2025 with companies already under the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), followed by all large EU companies in 2028, and qualifying non-EU companies in 2029 according to the latest Omnibus proposal, published on February 26, 2025. CFOUR Comply, as a CSRD reporting software, is specifically designed to assist all these companies in meeting their reporting obligations efficiently and accurately, regardless of their size or implementation phase.
A : CSRD is crucial because it fosters transparency and accountability in sustainability reporting. It supports the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and provides a standardized approach to reporting ESG factors, which is crucial for sustainable finance.

A : Selecting iXBRL software for CSRD involves close consideration of how practical the solution is in day-to-day use. Review how straightforward the tool is for CSRD reporting, as many iXBRL platforms have complex interfaces. Confirm that the software is regularly updated to reflect the latest ESEF taxonomy. It is also important to examine the validation and submission engine, as this determines whether the output file meets regulatory requirements. In addition, several other key capabilities are discussed in “How to choose iXBRL software” guide.
